Just curious why companies are hell bent on hiring H1-B employees. I'd imagine the talent is similar but H1-B would be more complicated. Are they doing this to save money? What's the TC difference?
It is the same within a company unless you work for one of the body shops like TCS. If you are working for Yahoo, Google, Facebook or any legit company, your visa status and your packages are not correlated. Over time though, if you can’t change jobs because of status, your package might suffer.
H1B employees are less likely to switch jobs often since it's a lot more difficult, so over time it's cheaper for companies even if the initial package may be similar. Companies aren't dumb. If it were cheaper to hire domestically, they wouldn't try so hard to get H1B employees.
Boy it must feel like hitting the lottery.
That's not true. 3 H1Bs in my team left last year for higher paying companies. Only H1Bs who can't get good offers don't switch jobs. That's the same for US citizens. If you don't have better offer, you stay.
At the same company? They're about the same for reputable companies. An H1B is even more expensive since you have to pay for legal and government fees to sponsor them. For the body shops though... One of the reasons H1B allocations should be a blind auction.
Its basic demand vs supply If there are no h1b offering then supply of worker would be less and salaries would start increasing But downside is, that would make cost of doing business in US expensive and would encourage outsourcing which would result in more jobs moving offshore
Tax foreign outsourcing (or outsourcing to local firms that use foreign outsourced labor) on a per role basis at 150% of the average lost American salary and suddenly it becomes a significantly less appealing value proposition. Investor greed is neither the fault nor the responsibility of everyday American workers.
That would make american companies less competitive in world markets
@OP H1B base salaries are public information. Look it up and see how it varies by company
Yeah, I doubt OP even knows about that. Here you go OP: https://h1bdata.info/index.php?em=Dropbox+Inc&job=Software+Engineer&city=SAN+FRANCISCO&year=All+Years Do sort by base salary. Who's cheap labor now?
Good information, thank you.
Long and short: h1b/h1 is a welfare program for wealthy companies borne by everyday American workers.
Lol
The more restrictive your work condition becomes, the lower the pay you will receive. It’s as simple as that - a common law in math, physics, and social science. Who has more freedom and lower cost for career moves (horizontally or upwards) - a citizen or a visa holder? Think about it; and the answer is pretty clear.
Started on H1B, TC was par.
Man, the resentment from Deloitte is strong tonight. Not every company is a body shop.
Legally it should not be different, companies are not allowed to use H1B to replace American workers with cheaper people from countries like India
Right. Now what's the real answer?
From what I have seen H1Bs sometimes settle with even less than half of a citizen to keep their visa status
