Looking at levels.fyi the salaries are way off base compared to salaries to similar levels at FANG. Especially with the scope of things they do and business issues with Snap, I don’t get why the pay is like that. Any thoughts?
Where there's long term viable work, the base salaries are low. When there are time-based milestones that a company is chasing, they will pay a premium with exploding offers that have sharp cliffs. You cannot make long term careers in such places.
So are you saying Snap has high base? But I think what person below is saying is most of it is stock grants
Snap’s bade is decent (at par or slightly higher than tech giants) and initial RSUs are huge. Plus now they have monthly vest right after 1st month; so no worries about vesting schedule.
salary does not include stock grants, you can’t use these terms interchangeably
I meant TC

@OP Alexa, shut up.
More risk, more stocks. Once Pinterest goes ipo, scope of stock tanking 40% or going up 30% is very probable.
Convincing people to join/stay at a company with lots of negative publicity, risk, and stress requires additional compensation.
Of late, Snap stock is on fire. It has climbed from around $4 to $11. Its IPO price was in the vicinity of $17 and it rose up to $28. It’s still way below its peak price but is inching back towards its IPO price.

Depends on when the figures are calculated. Pinterest’s pay is illiquid. That’s why you see these crazy grants at pre IPO places. Snap was illiquid until recently. I could also imagine snap might pay even more in stock just to retain the good engineers they have (if they think they can make a turn around). IMO Pinterest could easily go the way of Snap if / when Facebook decides to point their guns at them. Personally I find their product to be easily replicable, and not all that feature rich (like ok I made this pin board, now what?). Also the way they integrate ads is pretty bad.
I’m surprised Pinterest is still around tbh. Seems like a waste of vc.
You should really just compare the base salary because TC has been meaningless for years at Pinterest. People claim to be making "700 TC annually" for the past 5 years, but really only take home $100K post tax from base.
