For at will employees, what is acceptable notice for leaving? Is it rude/faux pas to give very short notice (1-5 days)? On the contrary is 2 months too long?
2 week minimum. More if you’re working on a high profile project or require significant knowledge transfer. Anything less and you’re risking burning the bridge and kissing future recommendations goodbye.
Thanks!
Two weeks is generally acceptable. You may want to discuss with your manager if they are okay with shorter duration. In some companies I have heard manager telling the person to not come again and still receive two weeks pay.
No more than two weeks. If they really need your knowledge don't be an asshole. Offer them your consultancy rate. But really never happened. Code is code and new people will be just fine reading the mess.
You can do same day notice if you bring confetti and an air horn
I lol'd.
Lol - that would be so good.
@OP, two weeks
Two weeks is customary for an employee but the employer can yank your job away w/o notice.
I did one week because I had no leeway. Apparently with my previous company, someone tried to do 2 weeks but they just walked him out the same day.
It's definitely rude to give less than two weeks. I try to give 1+ month notice. I always stay on good terms with companies I leave and want to not only leave the door open to come back, but also do the right thing by my teammates and leave things in a clean, tidy state.
Thanks!
