I’m an E6 at Facebook, with PhD and 5 YOE. I interviewed with Google and while I was told I would be considered for L6, the recruiter says it’s all up to hiring committee and they may approve me for L5 instead. I have been a high performer and can see getting promotion to E7 at FB within a couple of years but I don’t enjoy the work here anymore. Is it going to be better for my career to switch to Google? How hard is it to get an L6 offer from them?
Hard, but certainly possible. You’ll need to have a strong background, technical interview, and demonstrate technical leadership.
Interested also. Promotion at Google is really hard and depends on the project
If you have a chance to get e7 at fb then stay there.
Do you say you are an E6 ? Or the number of years of exp puts you somewhere ?
Not very hard at all. I've seen dummies get it.
Don't come in as L5. Only google thinks its L5 is comparable to L6 at FB. Google is over hyped with many big corporation problems. No need to take a step back to join .
Well Facebook kind of thinks that way too. I’ve seen google L5s easily get FB E6 offers but haven’t seen the other way around. The levels at FB are kind of inflated and I don’t really know if I get to E7 it will be treated equally outside of FB.
Yes it’s true. FB E6 is overrated and equivalent to seasoned Google L5 tech lead. The advantage of FB E6 over G L5 is comp, which has taken a beating recently.
I was down leveled with 4 YOE and PhD without even an argument. You're looking at 3-4 years until promo should you join, so you would likely be better off staying until you L7 or have enough YOE to clear the bar. Or go somewhere that would match your L6 for a couple years.
If they'll match compensation, I think l5 is a sweet spot. not too hard, not amateur hour either. G is more engineering focused. Just.. take it easy as a 5.
