I'm a backend dev at Google, want to move into the game industry (tooling, engine work). Will I have a hard time since I don't have experience in the industry? Are recruiters generally picky with background?

I'm a fast learner and have personal projects in the area, but I worry they won't care about this.

Keep it a hobby unless TC is not important to you.

TC AND working hours (in most gaming areas). Get paid 20-50% less (or more) for working 20-50% more hours.

Think you are safe with the Google as a resume. However, expect longer work hours and less pay

    • Stadia infra is incredible and near magic. The consumer platform did not do the infra justice.

Don’t worry about SGE closing down. Everyone knew google wouldn’t trade financial blows with MSFT for territory in the gaming space. If anything SGE’s existence was surprising for Google.

Be more concerned that John Justice left Stadia. Tried to sell the world on his vision for Stadia and failed.

How do you squander an opportunity and investment that large? The hubris prior to launch was incredible.

This is true of nearly all of Google’s failed projects. Amazing tech built to support a shitty product nobody wants. Glass, Google+, Play Music, Allo, the list goes on and on. Google may have the best tech but when paired with the worst product management in the biz it amounts to nothing. I am certain Stadia will be the same.

If you're gonna apply to Tools, Engine, Gfx, Network, Audio, etc it won't be that hard. Good progs willing to do all those are hard to come by. Really long line of freshers with no experience applying to Gameplay positions though.

I applied to one of the above positions and easily got in to the few studios I applied to but my friend has been applying to Gameplay positions for over a year now with no luck.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I definitely want to be on the engine/foundation side of things.
