A recruiter reached out to me regarding a job opening in "Core Services Engineering" Group. Any idea if it's worth applying for? I have worked in Microsoft CSS team earlier and didn't like it.

Current TC: 135K (in Midwest), YOE: 9

I'm not sure what should be my expected TC. I'm looking for at least level 62.

  • It's Microsoft IT. Very different to CSS. You'll be doing crap work on crap internal systems and services that are either severely outdated or severely underfunded.

Thankless job in a poorly run and poorly funded organization that it will be very difficult transfer out of.

      Thanks guys for your response.
It seems like it's worse than CSS. I have worked in CSS and didn't like the job because of how MS treats support employees. I would assume since it's poorly funded the growth opportunities would be limited. How's work-life balance there?

    • Objectively, CSS is worse. CSE are engineers and are treated that way, although they are considered a tier below the main engineering groups.

Have heard good things about WLB there

It used to be called MSIT. I wouldn't advise unless you have to move and don't have a better option

Should have known that when you decided to be a bystander. Well, I take that back since not everyone could be Sherlock.

Primarily supporting internal business operations of the company. Being the 200K+ employees + vendor company you will get opportunity to deal with large complex problems that you may not have a chance in most companies. Moreover, after 1 or 2 years you will have the opportunity to move to product teams if you have established yourself
