What is the sentiment among the employees about Wayfair’s future? With no profits in the history of its existence, does anyone believe the company has a future?
Protip: Don't take advice from Amazon about Wayfair. The company is doing quite well. The business model is solid, revenues are growing quickly, and the company is on solid financial footing. Despite what others say, there are plenty of competent and experienced software engineers here, especially in the areas that really count, and the tech stack is rapidly improving. My managers here are open to new ideas and solutions that have a business impact. I'm personally very bullish on the company's future.
Wayfair's US business has been profitable for almost 2 years now, albeit not every single quarter. It's losses mostly come from investments in logistics and expanding businesses in UK & Germany.
Disclaimer: This is my last week at Wayfair. That said, I'm also bullish on the company in the long term. In terms of Engineering culture, there are pockets of good and bad, but the senior leaders that came in over the past 18 months are making a push to improve things. They're gradually gaining ground on the "I've only worked at Wayfair" contingent.
How would you rate the Product teams? Are they any good? Or do they just act as Project/Program managers who deliver features that the leadership asks for - as is the case in many product companies.
I have more exposure to the product folks on the infra side of things and have been impressed with them. Storefront or other orgs may be different, though.
Tell me about same for Walmart 😂 and why is even Amazonian commenting to this thread?
It’s a HUGE company. So there isn’t a blanket answer that applies to all teams and business at Walmart. But I can talk about the US retail and e-commerce business. Walmart does not have a very high bar when it comes to hiring talent. You will find a LOT of people who are not right for the position they have been hired for. Having said that, there are some extremely talented and hardworking people too, but the number is really small. Your experience at Walmart will highly depend on what team you’re a part of. If I had to rate all teams on a scale of 0 to 10; 0 being I want to just leave this goddamn team at any cost and 10 being I never think about switching teams or companies; I would say 70% of the teams will fall in the 0-5 bracket. The main reason is the quality of work, and in some cases extremely incompetent managers. Despite this there are a lot of people who stick around for years, and that’s because of the money, and the slow and relaxed life in non-management roles.
It's a same problem in all companies. Isn't it? As they say grass is greener on other side. But when you go other side it's same tone of sh#t. Best way to tackle such problem keep switching employer every 2 years and get better raise as you switch. Remember you won't likely get same raise when you stick to same side of grass.
I feel wayfair is a shut hole. A## h##### management. 0 emotional quotient. They just try to promote people of their ethnicity. I have seen an org where every manager is of same ethnicity. Cannot be a coincidence. And one of manager is so incompetent that if you him something, he will end up confusing you. All the girls in his team either changed the team or left the company. I kinda get this feeling that the even though he is a manager but lacks experience. This is what happens when you make people manager without any experience.
Honestly, I have never race being a problem at Wayfair and I've switched teams quite a few times. Wayfair's bigger problem is being unable or unwilling to get rid of those internally promoted managers who've worked here all their life. The hiring bar was so low back then, that these guys are in senior leadership now but have seriously inferior skillset.
I second you. But an incompetent manager promotes incompetent culture which is something wayfair doesn't realise.
I think try to figure out yourself. :D when you see a team with managers of same ethnicity, it is that team.
Hint dude hint? Narrow it down?

In what sense? Could you give more details please?
Well they are buying their growth which can’t be sustained when other competitors like amzn comes for the same pie. Their engineering is alrite with very low bar. Their managers are mostly young and got promoted from SWE with no good leadership skills atleast that’s what I learnt when I interviewed there.
