Why 180k TC and lots of extra working hours can make people work for Google? I am just curious because every time I asked my friends at google what are they doing at evening, they are still working....while I can get off work after 5:00 pm . If I want to eat at the cafeteria, I can stay until 6:00 pm. I started work at 10:00 am. My current tc is more than 150k, all cash. 30k for extra work, considering before tax, really isn’t attractive to me. I don’t have any pressure for house because I already bought a single family in my first year of work. At Samsung, sometimes if there is not much work I can play cellphones and watch the stock market all day.
Lol ! Hardly see a Samsung guy on blind. Now we know what they are upto. Sounds like a good life. 180K for how many YOE?
Google is way more than 180K TC
Lot of people make way more than 180k at google. Your friends probably don’t share the exact TC with you so as to make you not feel bad.
For degree not related to CS, less than 4 yoe is L3. L3 without competing offer is 180 TC. I only have 1.5 yoe and is determined L3. Lots people at Samsung also make way more than 180k... that’s not apple to apple comparison
Yeah but they could have gotten stock which appreciated a lot or refreshers. Also, it depends on the individual how much they work.
Plenty of Nooglers are hired at 225-260 TC with 2 YOE, and 200+ TC with 1.5 YOE. And some with 2 YOE are hired as L4. Your assumptions are false, OP. If you don't believe me, search Blind and check levels.fyi
2 yoe of swe L4 is only for those with a cs phd degree.
(Location also plays a large role in determining TC, needless to say.)
I read this post as I'm on my 330pm Gbus back home on a Friday lol. I joined as L3 new grad, and my ratings are high. There are people on my team that work much longer, and also people that work less. There's definitely no need to stay at office longer just to do well here.
OP, a lot depends on one's team culture. I imagine plenty of employees are expected to work late, and many are not. If you're doing a team match, ask.
I never met anyone that was expected to work late however I know some people that do because they want.
Seems like the line between want to and feel like one needs to could occasionally be blurry, particularly in a company of 90,000 high achieving types. I could be wrong. Sounds like in general there is quite good work/life balance.
Are you in the Bay Area? I want to know how you bought a house with $150k TC and 1.5 yoe. It would be impossible to even save up a down payment.
It's definitely possible. I have friends in SF proper earning $150k TC who are saving 50% of their post-tax income
Okay, let's do the math. 150k is about 100k take home, so saving 50k. 1.5 years of that is 75k. With 20% down, that's a $375k house. Tell me where you can buy a house for $375k in the Bay Area.

I leave work everyday around 5 and I do not work after because I have a family. I guess it's a matter of personal choice on WLB. But nothing to do with extra TC.
Does that affect performance ratings?
Not for me. I do my work well at working hours and get good ratings. Been promoted twice.
