https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mercurynews.com/2019/12/24/oakland-official-threatens-to-seize-moms-4-housing-home/amp/ Why should I work hard to save up money to buy a house when I can just take over a vacant property? What are your thoughts?
Wtf? The shocking thing is that the city is supporting this? What's next? So tomorrow someone just decides to get into my car parked on my driveway just because they need it. Wait, isn't that called stealing? So now I have to negotiate with the thieves to get my car back?
I hear your perspective , but why should you have a property while they are homeless just because of the lottery of birth?
Most homeless are due to some unfortunate circumstance, usually due to wrong choices. There is no lottery. My parents were from extremely modest backgrounds. We would be considered lower middle class. We lived frugally, saved. No vices. We didn't even have a TV at home until me and my sibling were in high school.
Every one deserves high quality free housing, specially when I'm not the one paying for it.
Seizing property sounds extremely unlawful but hey it is even more unfair they someone has to be homeless while someone else is trying to make profit of a Multi million property. There is nothing more unfair than wealth disparity.
Just because the owner is a corporation? What if it was your rental? You as a single individual? What if you were counting on it for your income?
Haha, if Tendulkar9 was a multi millionaire (say 5M networth) and had a home worth a million that was occupied illegally, he would have a very different opinion.
This is politics at its worst. Cities hate vacant homes and they hate investors that buy homes and leave them empty. I also feel bad for anyone who’s homeless. The city is not impartial in this fight. They fund affordable housing and they’re trying to force this RE investor to come to the table. I bet you that this will end up in this house being sold for cheap to this group. I hope some hardline constitutional attorney comes and stops this in its tracks. It’s setting a terrible precedent for government overreach.
If the city wants, it can provide alternative housing for these women and their kids. I don’t see why they should confiscate property that doesn’t belong to the squatters. This is just dumb.
The city is never at fault. It's always tech companies for paying high salaries, tech workers for making too much money, immigrants for moving in, and the rich for spending too much money. The role of the city is to collect taxes and find out who is at fault for insufficient public services.
@Itchybutt The city also innovates by devising new taxes
OP you answered your own question. If you live in a vacant house you will get kicked out..
The Bay Area has more empty homes than homeless people, which is unfortunate. Govt should tax vacant properties and encourage owners to put their properties on the market quicker.
The media too has a part to play. It is one thing to report this stealing. It is another thing altogether by actually giving these thieves a podium by shoving Mics and cameras in their faces and allowing this "press conference". This is blatant and outright theft and legitimizing it in the public eye by changing a narrative around it. The media is as much to blame.
If only all rich (as in: employed and not homeless) commie blinders put their money where their mouths are and got their money together, bought apartments for homeless, did not charge rent from them etc. But instead they will spew their commie nonsense across social networks for the opportunity to feel righteous for 5min.

Don't buy shitty properties in shitty neighborhoods in shitty cities. This was one of the reasons why banks allowed people to stay in their homes for years without paying mortgage.
