Pretty much the title above. I am evaluating an L5 offer from Google. How long does it usually take for external L5 hires to get to L6 at Google ?

Edit : @ Googlers are some orgs better (faster) than others ? If yes, please comment which ones.

Above L5, average is not very meaningful. Many people will stay at L5 forever (or a very long time). If you have the skills, 2 years is possible but pretty rare and lots of luck is needed (right project, fast ramp up, good support from leadership). Without too much luck (but still some skills), 3-3.5y is very doable and is the median. If you don’t have the L6 skills yet, then you first need to learn them. Some people never do (lack of motivation, lack of technical skills, or people skills, etc)

It takes around 3+ years for a noogler. It's same as getting promoted to sde3. L6 is like sde 3.5. you need to ramp up to new code, architecture etc so it's take time. L6 is a pretty big jump from L5.

I also joined from AWS, I found Amazon engineering to be very mediocre as compared to Google so you might have to put extra effort at Google.

You need to be lucky to get L6 scope project, or be a genius to propose one yourself.

2+ usually It really depends on the project and team. How much it aligns with your skills and interests and whether you are at the right place at the right time.

    L5 is terminal level.

But if you really wanted to, you could do it in 3 years (with the right opportunity)
