I dislike the day to day of software engineering. I’m going to switch career paths, but am wondering how long I should stay in my current posistion as to avoid negative implications. I have been with Amazon for 8 months - first job straight out of college. TC 120, < 1 YOE
Stay at least 1-1.5 year to build up your resume. Could you explore other functions at A?
Yea I probably could, my manager mentioned in one of our first 1 on 1’s that people often transition to other functions. It’s an option, though not something I’m overly keen about
You can start preparing and leetcoding now. You could leave after 10 months.
Not a huge fan of software engineering though. I don’t mind some coding here and there but the day to day feels very monotonous for me. Is leetcode required for non SWE/SDE roles? I’m thinking of something like deployment strategist at Palantir. Working with 3 letter agencies/SOF in Middle East seems like a cool adventure
Maybe join the military and try for the ISA. They do some of the coolest stuff.
I think a year is fine. You have to be slightly conniving in explaining how you’re only leaving because the new company is SO inspiring (but same for relationships, right?). I move every year and I 50%-100% boost my salary each time. But again, you have to be somewhat aggressive to back up that kind of plan.
Those are solid numbers from you
What are you planning to do instead? What don’t you like about it? And how did you get into engineering in the first place?
Not exactly sure what I want to do yet. Intel (civilian or military) is what I’d like to end up doing In my late 20’s-30’s but that’s not on the table for me right now as I want to stay in the US for a bit but am not a citizen. I don’t like being sedentary for the whole working day, and the work just feels monotonous to me. My team is in stealth right now and we are building a completely new product, but even so I don’t find it very interesting. I got into engineering by adding a CS major in my last year of college (was in finance). I did well and thought I’d give it a shot. It wasn’t what I thought it would be.
reasonable
OP - I’m sure there are plenty of folks in this industry cooking up a Plan B. :) - have to admit that I find it hard to see myself in this industry in the long run
Until you find a job you like more or that pays more
Really good question, remember you have to bring and take value from your current experience. Make sure you finish some sort of a project. Bring some value to the company and trust you will gain much more for yourself by striving to bring value. And this mindset will get you higher places in your future.
