I got hired into amazon as a senior data scientist. My role is almost purely oprational. I’ve been on the job 2 months and spend all my time in sql and creating excel based templates / dashboards. The work is important but its not data science. When i interviewed i signed up to worknon a team with two other data scientists. Their unit left the org and i was told this shortly before the job began. Ive been put in charge of interns who run a manual process and which mainly involves communication. Its important work and needed, and i appreciate that, but i am worried this will damage my career prospects. In europe you habe to give 3 months notice if you leave after 6 months. im about 2.5 months in. Im considering transferring internally or just leaving the firm for a better role. The longer i stay the more rusty and out of touch my data science toolset will become. im genuinely wortied that during my next interview ill sound like a BI guy more than a data scientist at all. Would you stick around for 1-2 years and see what happens or jump immeduately?
If you don't like I would move out within 6 to 12 months.
> My role is almost purely oprational Sounds about right for Amazon.
At will employment so feel free to leave whenever.
A big reason for me leaving a job is I’m not learning or working towards anything big or impactful. If I feel like my skills aren’t growing after some time I’ll start to look at what else is out there.
I would stay stuck around for at least half a year. It doesn’t look good if you jump from position to position. But if it’s really bad, then I suggest you just move! No reason to be unhappy if you don’t have to be.
until I can get another job
What team were you back then? What did you end up doing?
