How many PTO weeks should you take off your first year?

Assuming unlimited PTO, is 4 weeks ok? 5 weeks excessive? Series A/B startup but more laid back working environment Bay area

Why do you waste your life on blind like this 😌

Oath Atinlay2 Aug 3, 2019

You’re here too!

eBay abababbb Aug 3, 2019

6 weeks is what I would take

Oath Atinlay2 Aug 3, 2019

Why not 7 or 8?

Amazon nysxjogs Aug 3, 2019

Why not take 52? You want to take the right amount so you can be well rested to be the most efficient at work. Me personally I would take 4 or 5

Can’t imagine how you could be successful at a job and away that much. I struggle to get away 2 weeks a year and I work 100 hour weeks before and after to catch up. Yes 5 weeks is excessive, especially when you have to ask. If it is Ok you will know it because you earned it.

Oracle marriedM Aug 3, 2019

You're being exploited, my friend. 4-5 weeks is good and world standard for non-factory jobs.

Microsoft jmb1911 Aug 3, 2019

Maybe world standard. American standard is 2 weeks as best I can tell. Tech companies expanding that as they compete for perks and they know people won’t take it anyway.

8 unlimited vacation is a scam.

Touché

Facebook dividebyz Aug 3, 2019

Not if you use 8 weeks every year

Adobe Spidey™🕸️ Aug 3, 2019

52 seems to be industry average.

Tibco software AETF25 Aug 3, 2019

8 weeks minimum

Facebook dividebyz Aug 3, 2019

Otherwise what's the point of unlimited PTO

Capital One Drake OP Aug 3, 2019

Even for a startup?? That seems excessive and I know Google/Facebook you all can do this but your company also has exponentially more resources.

Take the time you need, dont try to game the system

“Ok” depends entirely on the company culture. I would stay conservative until you've become productive and delivered something solid. From there, as long as you're exceeding expectations, take what works for you and your manager/team.

Capital One Drake OP Aug 3, 2019

Conservative like 4 weeks?

Google o Aug 3, 2019

I meant taking less vacation for first 3-6 months as you become useful and ramping up from there

Take as many days as you need to maintain health (mental and physical) and personal order. There are very good reasons for needing more frequent time off a year, and unlimited PTO is, supposedly, an acknowledgment of that. We've convinced ourselves folks taking 2 or 3 days off a month is somehow *more* disruptive than folks who are burnt out, sick, and completely unmotivated because their social lives & marriages are in shambles and WTF is the point.

Capital One Drake OP Aug 3, 2019

Thank you for this. 3 days a month = 7 weeks a year. I can roll with that haha.

Docker λ ☕ -> 😌 Aug 4, 2019

To be fair, many months have holidays that count towards that. The actual PTO used will be much lower. But, consider 5 weeks is typical in much of the EU. What chutzpah a company would need to have to say, "unlimited PTO but, actually, less than what's required by law in Europe because that's excessive"

Oracle pondyi Aug 3, 2019

I would break it up and take 2 weeks at a time

Capital One Drake OP Aug 3, 2019

I was thinking 1 for a quick get away, 2 for a planned trip with friends like every 3 months. Thank you for the input!
