What does a (Google) recruiter evaluate when they ask that how many hours do you code per week? 90% of the time was spent coding in my previous company, but in the current company I took one more senior management role. I am not honest when I tell the recruiter that I currently code 80% of the time. I feel if I would mention it to be 50% then it might give a negative impression. What am i supposed to tell? Why would they ask this question if the interview is already meant to be for SDE role?
They don't care. As long as you don't say 0 or 100%
What's the rationale behind their question?
I'd also like to know this.
If you’re a lower level engineer you would normally say 90% or 100%. More senior folks spend less and less, down to 0%. So your answer would indicate where you are on your trajectory. If your answer is higher than expected then perhaps you’re not doing great job. If it’s lower with reasonable reasons then perhaps you could be considered for higher level
For senior roles >= L5, it should be then roughly 60-70%?
I don’t know about expectations at Google, but to me 70- 80% sounds better unless you’re very proactive and leading team efforts
I code less than 50% of my work time. This is reducing noticeably as I take on more responsibility. Hoping I can get it down to 25% so I can go for promo. Seriously though, between reviewing code, design work, meetings, planning, hiring, writing test plans and all the other shit I do, coding still takes up the most time, but not a majority. The only way to keep that number high is to grind out menial tasks that don’t require any real insight or neglect your other duties. Now that I think of it, I didn’t write a single line today.
I can go full week without even opening my IDE
