How much equity should I ask for from a well funded series A startup with between 30-50 people (mostly engineering)? Salary is well below market rate, and less than I'm getting currently, so trying to figure out what amount of equity would make it worth it to join. Extra details: - huge A around - based in London - really solid team of engineers working there (lots of ex goog/fb/etc) Current TC: ยฃ80k plus fake money, 3yoe
To be clear weโre talking 30-50 people and not 30-50 wild hogs?
Very hard question, you're basically becoming an angel investor purchasing stock at the price of the delta in liquid TC, although with an added insider edge where you can affect the success of the product and leave in a year if it's not going well or stay on an earlier grant for 4 accumulating stock at an outdated valuation if it is. The questions about how much equity you need are fundamentally the same questions that an angel investor would ask about how much equity they should get for putting in X dollars, so maybe look into how you would apply a risk adjusted value to the startup from your perspective.
Thanks for the detailed thoughts. I guess that's one way to approach it. When I read through blind and others asking similar questions, it sounds like people are saying you should be getting _more_ at a startup because of the risk, but I don't see how that's possible. They aren't dishing out huge equity to any engineer at 40 people already and clearly can't compete on salary with more established companies
What are you going to do / your role and title?
