I've been 100% remote for a couple of years. It's been great being around for our toddler. However, my TC is š„compared to what I could be making living in CA or WA. If you were to put a number on it, how much is the 100% remote thing worth to you. Would you think of it as an absolute number like say +20K p.a. or a percentage of your TC. Especially looking for answers from people with kids and working spouse, I think this benefit helps a lot in this scenario.
Hey, I dont have kids but I know how my daycare can cost. Did you also factor in how much ur saving from not having to pay for daycare ?
we are actually paying for preschool, its better for the kid socially and intellectually. ~2K per month.
Funny when people think working from home also means taking care of kids. "Work" and "childcare" are mutually exclusive. Unless your kid is on tv or device all day
I would take a 20% cut to TC to work remote. Working remote is actually my goal. Living in CA is unfulfilling. Would rather have the freedom to move where I want. Me and wife are just saving as much as possible to put down enough on a house where we both wonāt have to work to make payments.
thanks that is in line with my thinking. I didnt take a but, rather kept my shitty TC when going from onsite to remote.
Itās more of a lifestyle choice. There is no absolute number and there is no clear cut. Do it if you enjoy it.
i have no particular problems with it, nor do i enjoy it. just thinking i'm done with this now, so looking for regular positions. So was wondering how much should i adjust my actual TC when comparing to new offers.
(I have 2 kids in K and pre-k, working spouse not in tech, own house in SF) Depends on where youād live. I love Vancouver, but frankly I might need a pay raise to go there, or at least the same TC. If I could move back to the small towns in the East Coast where our families live, Iād take a 50% pay cut to work remote. Thatās actually my goal. Be able to buy a nice 3,000 sq ft home on the lake, work remote making maybe $175kTC. Wife wouldnāt have to work, weād have a much bigger and nicer house, commute wouldnāt kill me. Just would suck for our Poly lifestyle though. Thatās the real kicker. How much is that worth š (Bay Area is great)?
Thing is, i actually live in WA, very close to all these FAANG employers. Already own a 3000 sq ft house here. Doesnt make sense that im remote, apart from the kids thing.
Ahhh, remote but still at Apple? 5% cut? Maybe 3%. Just to consider the cost of gas, car depreciation etc. my job is super flexible already though, so I can leave at 2 or come in at 11, or just WFH on days I need to.
The thing with remote is that the salaries are adjusted for your areaās COL. So itās even trickier to compare/adjust. You could simply move to a higher COL area and increase your TC. Having said that, you can be remote and live in CA/Bay Area and still make good money, and if you were to move to a lower COL expect the company to adjust it to the local market.
Itās definitely a life choice. I have been working remote for 2 years and like you mentioned you start missing the office life and interaction. I believe one grows and matures in their career learning from one another at least in the early stages of your career.
I think this is entirely dependent on where you are in your career. My first job out of college was fully remote as a BI Consultant, it was great for ~3 years. The last year, the lack of socialization and peer interaction led me to start looking elsewhere and ended up at AWS. Loving the experience did being with my coworkers & office life, at least for now. Definitely a trade off, but Iām enjoying myself way more than the last 1-2 years remote.
Been about 70% remote the past year. Most likely will change to a regular job. I can't put a dollar value on it. It's really a lifestyle choice; you either want it or you don't. My next job will likely be same'ish TC. My kids are in school/daycare all day. I cherish having breakfast and making dinner every single day with the family, and even with the new job I will force that to happen somehow. It's about putting your foot down and drawing the boundaries ... As early as the interview stage. So ... It doesn't have to be all or nothing, just figure out what you need as far as flexibility in your life.
Thanks. Yes, incredibly thankful for simple things like being able to cook every single day.
For Amazon how did you end up in remote position. Just because you case doesnt need you to be onsite? Or was it on request?
Priceless! Fully remote for 5+years, 50% remote before that and can't imagine going back
Iām remote and get more than 200k per year. I would not move to a low cost area because it would be hard to find the next job. It is hard to find a full time remote position even though I already have one. With kids, most good school area places are expensive.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
