How normal is manager asking team to put tasks adding up to 80 hours/sprint?

2 week sprint = 2*40 hrs Is this normal in other tech companies such as FAANG, Microsoft, Unicorns? The team does both ML software development a d ML research. Putting hours in feels like manufacturing or retail.

The manager doesn’t believe your estimate, she thinks you blowing it up.

Microsoft JohnSnow🐲 Sep 22, 2018

We usually estimate 80% utilization, 20% for email and meetings.

We estimate 5 hours of coding. The rest is meeting and team code review

Uh this is why you should use “points” not hours

Points are also tricky. At the end of the day ,it will boils down to time.

Microsoft Tier 1 Sep 22, 2018

The thing with points is that there is no expectation of a fixed number of points per sprint.

I think my old company discounts the work hours by .6 towards sprint, because there are meetings that don’t involve coding
