I have been reading here on Blind about engineers making upwards of 300k base. Up until today I had never even dreamt of a salary like that and partly because I'm a tester and not an engineer. While I can read code in Java, JavaScript and SQL but my coding prowess is mediocre at best. However, going forward I would like to change that about me. I'm willing to put in more effort into improving my programming as well as problem solving skills. Now, I would like to know from folks here about what they do in their job roles and what kind of programming languages they use to make this kind of salary. Based on your suggestions I may be able to set a path for myself to reach my new goal. Currently, I'm researching information on following roles/areas: 1. Improve Java and be an Automation expert 2. Learn JavaScript and switch to front end development 3. Learn the technology stack of a full-stack Engineer 4. Foray into Data Science: learn data analysis and modelling techniques, learn about machine learning and AI; learn Python. 5. Stay a mediocre tester but learn trading instead. I will welcome your suggestions with an open mind. Please advice!
1. Usually it is 300k+ TC, not base salary (except few companies) 2. You need to switch to proper software engineer. You won't make such money being a tester or auto tester or frontend engineer for sure. It will take huge amount of time, you need to invest into education a lot. And you won't make 300k right away of course. If everything goes well you will start as a junior with much less money.
Thanks for your input many-a's-and-42 :). If I'm understanding it correctly then your indication is also towards a full-stack engineering role. I shall look into that.
Faang frontend has same payband as swe might be harder for L6+ but you can easily make 300k+
Only Netflix can get you 300k base for a mid level position.
I've just set a very high goal however, I'll be more than happy to even reach in the vicinity of 200k. Nonetheless, I will try my best for a Netflix interview after I have done my part first. Thank you for taking the time.
Donât get too distracted by base/salary pay, total compensation is what matters most. Netflix pays highest salaries but no stock. You earn just as much at FAANG companies but only half is salary, the other half stock.
Donât say youâre mediocre, say youâre an expert and youâll be an expert.
Thanks for the boost and I will try my best. Glad I asked the question and got to know about leetcode. I'm going to start practicing there.
Include soft skills and networking, as a lot of those jobs with high base pay will be much easier to find through a network
Those salaries are at specific companies, FANG++ so just do your leetcode and do well on interviews and you'll get it.
Number 3 plus practice on Leetcode will rocket boost your salary
Thank you for your input sinkle. I will gather more info on full-stack development and Leetcode.
