I'm about a year into a career of product management. I'm very unhappy with my current situation and looking to move on - however I'm getting a solid 0% response rate even for APM roles. Not sure if I should keep applying or look for alternatives. Every product management job seems to want 3-5 years in a specific field, some Amazon roles (as an example of a high paying option) even want 10, I've seen upwards of 12 too. It kind of blows that you have to accumulate such a long stretch of experience especially given most PM roles aren't super technical. Any advice? I can't keep working the job I have. It's unfulfilling and I'm not advancing my skillset at all. Believe me when I say finding a new job or occupation is the most optimal decision I could make.
Just bite the bullet for a little while longer. Also trying doing an internal transfer if you see a team or product you're interested. You're resume shows that you're ready to leave.
There will definitely be bullets involved if I stay here and I won't be biting them 😵🔫
Sorry to hear that. Some of the folks provided some real good suggestions. It may be best to weigh them out and see what suits you and is worth pursuing. Best of luck bud.
PMs are everywhere so you need to differentiate yourself from the pack of vanilla cookie cutter PMs. What do you bring to the table that would make them want you instead? Work on that answer and focus your resume and interviews around that selling point(s).
I think it depends more on what the company wants and if I fit their bill
Try looking at medium sized startups. They may not pay top dollar, but are large enough where they’re starting to see stratification in the ranks, and so are willing to hire and foster junior PMs with promise. The reason PM jobs ask for 3-5 years experience is because it’s a job that requires judgment to evaluate tradeoffs. And developing good judgment is mostly a function of experience. Being super technical is a bonus, not a requirement.
Yeah I go on BuiltInNYC, Angel, find startups on indeed, I've applied to a handful of them. Still not hearing back, I don't know if it's my resume or not. I put a fair amount of time into making sure the content is quality and that it actually says what I "did" at the company without being vague.
PM positions require experience for a reason. Otherwise it’s like giving the keys to someone who doesn’t know how to drive. Usually it takes a few yrs exp in SDE, BA, or similar role. Some get their foot in the door being business owners elsewhere. Start creating your own projects at your current employer to gain real experience. If that doesn’t satisfy you, at least you’ll have some years under your belt to jump.
