Been in my current role for 3.5 years, I really want to know if I will get promoted or not. My manager just got promoted last year after 4 years so I don't know if he was following the strategy (he is new to the American system) I was the only one doing my job untill they hired someone 20yrs senior to me. Is this a good time to bring it up?? Rather, give me tips on how politely can do it? I am super blunt :( and he thinks it's rude (Old styled Brit manager) I am becoming restless.
Words and stuff
Always work with your manager from day 1 towards your growth. Tell them that you want to grow in your role and have them set **written** goals for you. Ensure that you are always following up with them on the goals and ensuring that you get continuous feedback (always hve the feedback documented from your 1:1). During the review cycle bring up your goals and how you have exceeded them. If you are aiming for a promo you need to do this exercise way ahead of your review start so that you can be nominated for a promo and all the formalities can be done even before the review cycle begins. Good luck!!
It's your career, no one can help you but you. It's ok to be direct and sincere without coming off as rude. Just come prepared. Make sure you are having discussions with your managers about your work ethic and if you are confident that you are meeting his/her expectations for success. I would say something along the lines of... "I've been here X amount of years, you set X expectations and I have been successful in doing so (provide some examples and proof) I'm looking to move up in my career and wanted kickoff a discussion to see if there is a possibility for a promotion within the next year. Can you provide some actionable feedback so we can make this a reality? Or if I am meeting expectations can you provide some transparency on the process and how promotions are determined within the company?"
I mean the best thing is to already have established career goals with him from day 1. Next best thing you can do is find a fallback job and go ask for the promotion. If he says no then you move to the other job where hopefully you'll have a better experience. Not much else that can be done when you have leadership like that that just won't talk about your needs.
Why should you be promoted? Are you a teamster? You mention 3.5 years at the level, so is there a schedule for promotions?
Thanks ladies (men if any who replied) I brought this up today and my manager didn't sound promising. He neither said -" I have thoughts about it" or "may be you are in line or something similar" I just got the feeling he hasn't thought through and that since I brought it up; he should have something. TBH didn't feel positive which sucks
Watch who are the people at the next level and how they are performing. Are you comparable?
You should believe in your capabilities and go for it. Hiring senior in your team should not effect your growth.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
“How do I get to next level?” That’s it. It’s not hard. You just need to bring it up. Most manager won’t bring it up unless you ask because promotions comes with larger scope of work. They’re not sure if you want to take on the larger scope.
