We learn interviewing from CTCI and LeetCode Premium, distributed data structures from DDIA, but where do we learn on how to become a Tech Lead? #tech #techlead

  • Serious answer, leadership is mostly learned on the job through mentorship from existing tech leads. I’m teaching one now. These sort of arrangements are pretty common when your org needs another TL to grow their skill sets so you can have a deeper bench.

You still always have to have the theory before you can get into a practice. This is like saying that to learn LeetCode you have to just do LeetCode. Nope, that's terribly inefficient, what you have to do to learn LeetCode is read CTCI to refresh the comp sci basics, then you can simply use LeetCode for practice to confirm to yourself you actually still know the syntax of whatever language you're using, and can code up and test solutions to unknown problems in 20 minutes or even less.

Where's the theory for being a tech lead? Most teams only have one tech lead, and at Amazon noone teaches you anything just for the sake of it.

    • Read “The Manager’s Path” and “Staff Engineer”. That would help with the theory. But your assertion that theory is required before practice doesn’t really ring true. A lot of this is more gut feeling based on extensive experience. Something doesn’t feel right, so you ask questions, and those questions reveal critical information
