I have FAANGMULA onsites these next days and I tend to mess up because of nerves. All the knowledge is there, I have been studying and practicing full time for the past three months. When I do mock interviews I get fantastic results. Then, during the actual interview, I completely mess up. I stress out, have no structured communication and sound like a nervous wreck who can’t think analytically (but I can!) What to do? @ interviewer peeps: do you cut people slack when you notice they’re messing up due to nerves? :/
Jerk off before you leave your house.
Does that work for girls too?
Try to imagine yourself in a successful scenario and it will feel more natural when you attempt to emulate that scenario
Epsom salt bath Wear comfortable clothing Meditate
You can try meditation. Just a few minutes a day (start with what ever doesnt feel like a chore) where you focus on your breathing to clear your mind.
Do more mocks, especially with interviewers who are tougher
Box breathing is what navy seals use to stay calm. 4 sec in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold repeat
This works for me a lot actually, will do this for sure!
Yeah pretty crazy how breathing can affect you
I used box breathing method + meditation at both of my onsites
I just remind myself that all I can do is try my best, and the rest is out of my hands.
True!
Breathing
Do a ton of interviews. They will suck less and less and at some point you’ll be the one that makes the interviewer nervous
Take a very small amount of CBD to calm your nerves? Also practice. More reps you have the more comfortable you’ll be. Can’t substitute that
I don’t have access to CBD, my Next on-site is tomorrow. is there a substitute that’s equally as effective?
Apart from what everyone else mentioned (i.e. breathing techniques, meditation beforehand), what you ultimately need to figure out is how to mentally prep. 1. Make sure you move around and get good blood flow. Don’t shrink into yourself while waiting. Better blood flow so you’re not shaking or getting the nerves get to you. 2. Proper grounding. Entering into a destructive internal anxiety struggle is what you’re trying to avoid. Think about other stuff or a way to snap out of the cycle. Whether it’s small talk or something completely unrelated to the interview itself. 3. Mental fortitude. You say you rock the practice. You have the skill and the experience. You’re a fucking badass and they’re lucky to have you. Fuck it. Try to bring that attitude with you.
