How to climb the ladder and become a director of Analytics

Hello. My manager left the company on his accord as he was pissed with his incompetent VP. VP was directly managing me for few months Finally, the leadership team realized that my VP of Analytics is really incompetent and let him go. Now I am directly reporting to a different VP who came from eBay and has been pretty popular for 8+ years . I am doing well for myself as a lead analyst (getting appreciated in monthly all hands meet) but I really aim to become a director in a year from now . I have two direct reports but I am trying to grow my span of control Can somebody recommend good books on being a better leader of team of Analysts or some other strategic mindset books for analysts . I am pretty hands on and have an MBA but I still feel I can brush up some skills . Also, can you give me any other career advice for climbing the ladder from a lead analyst to a director or a senior director role quickly . Thanks

Work on your writing skills. Your use of periods (or lack of) is going to hold you back.

Thank you . I will make sure I won’t send out any communication to VP while shitting :-)

You still messed it up with this reply. A “.” NEVER has a space before it.

The first rule above all others is understand what your new bosses priorities are and align to those. You don't need to be coming up with the strategic direction of the team. That's the VP's role with the other exec team members. Have an in depth discussion about what their top objectives are from the top and help achieve those ASAP. It may be team growth, it may be an advancement of the product line, either way this is an opportunity to have a reset and re-alignment on your goals and objectives. This is also a time to get critical feedback on how you and your team is viewed by others from someone who is new, has been briefed by exec management on what they think of you and your team, and can convey insight to you that otherwise you wouldn't get.

This. Your job, no matter what your level, is to make your boss look good to his boss and his boss’ boss. I used to work at Walmart, and the minute I stopped focusing on making myself look good and making my VP shine instead, I got promoted to an L6. Getting to L8-L10 helps if you’ve been at WMT at least a year in an L5-L6 role.

Director has to mean something very different at Walmart. The folks who are directors at FB or Google are in the top 1% of their orgs. There's no level 5 who can get there (level 8) in fewer than 5 years - and they've got to be utterly extraordinary. As a reference point, one of the directors at FB ran a 1000 plus org and came in as Sr. Manager. Best to figure out what works internally at Walmart.

Ask the new VP who seems to like you for advice

Walmart.com h1bhopeful OP Jul 13, 2019

I can’t be too direct that I want to be a director. Have to be subtle about it

Jet GgcE62 Jul 13, 2019

Why can’t you say you are committed to the team and are producing a lot and are interested in knowing what it would take to get to the next level?

What do you mean subtle? You think you will be subtly promoted. What is your current role and yoe?
