I’ve noticed that many of my friends who are not in tech harbor a lot of resentment towards gentrification of our city by tech workers and tech companies in general. I live in Seattle so the Amazon is the most predictable local whipping boy. Nationally, the media loves hating on Facebook. I got into programming way before all this tech boom, and I really just enjoy building cool stuff. The high salary is nice but that wasn’t the main motivation for me. I see where they are coming from, and I recognize I’m speaking from a place of privelege, but it doesn’t feel nice to have people trash your lifelong passion. I certainly would never piss on their profession, and I don’t think anyone of them would turn down the money if their field experiences a boom. I want to defend what I do but I would just appear to be “part of the problem”. Thoughts?
Get over it? You get to do what you like and make a lot of money. Let them complain, they’re not wrong.
Who cares, they would if they could
That high TC also means you should develop some thick skin . Your friends are not wrong but they are also a little jealous . There is nothing you can do so either ignore or get new friends . If you are really bothered then volunteer somewhere .
Tell them your best first world rich guy problems such as: I cant decide which color Model S to get. What should I do with my half a mil worth of vested FB stock? The free food is making me fat.
Damn you got into programming in the 80s? Cause that’s about the timeline this started to “boom” 😂 But seriously it’s a problem. And it isn’t you. Usually it’s out of being envy of the paycheck and thinking “job is easy” (to which I mention - so why don’t you try and the excuses start flowing) There isn’t a real solution honestly. I have a group of friends from all walks of life (from service advisor and mechanics , students all the way to post PhD who owns two companies) - nobody cares about money we make. And we help each other move up if we can and that’s it. What your mentioning is toxic if that’s such an issue. I mean you can always remind them downtown Seattle was drug dealers and parking lots and everybody see the past with pink glasses but that won’t help.
demagogues see us as someone to blame instead of their own policy failures so they send their constituents our way. Not sure what you'd do about it.
Ditch your friends
I love how people complain about gentrification when they never lived in pre-gentrified neighborhoods
Move out of the US or at least to New York.
