I got laid off from Quora last week. After the initial shock, the stress/anxiety/anger has started creeping in. I am on H1B visa, got 3 months to start a new job or I am out of this country. Asking for advice on how to deal with a period like this. Any success stories? I need some motivation... Also, when talking to companies, should I / how to address the layoff issue? I was only with the company for a few months so figured people would def ask. Btw if anyone is kind enough to refer, I am a data scientist with 3.5 YOE. My resume is not ready yet, but I am more than happy to share my LinkedIn through DM, if anyone is interested.
Dm me if you need a referal to Apple
Nobody needs federals at Apple, except federals
When this happens do you have to get another job in the same profession and skill as before?
I’ve only worked in data, not sure I’d be qualified for any other jobs
DM for amazon!
Will you be on payroll for three months?
2 months + 1 month left for visa
If you are laid off, H1-B offers you 60 days of time to find another job. So in your case you have 4 months as your company will still keep you on pay roll for 2 months.
It’s pretty well known that Quora has had big layoffs lately. Because you only worked there such a short time, tell interviewers it was a last-in-first-out situation. That way it’s no reflection on your performance
I didn’t know it’s well known since Quora is so small. This is good to hear. Thank you for your advice, makes a lot of sense!
Even though Quora is small, it’s well known because they have a reputation of hiring good talent. You should not have any problems getting a decent role in your timeframe.
Dm me for referrals to Amazon/AWS
It’s definitely a tough spot to be in. But as simple as it may sound you just gotta focus on taking concrete actions every single day. Make a list of what you want to accomplish every day (applying to XYZ, preparing for the interviews etc) and just focus all your time and energy on it. This will be a tough time but like everything else “this too shall pass” but in this case you will definitely come out to be tougher and stronger than you ever have been. Good luck!
Will keep this in mind 🙏 thank you for responding!
Leetcode it
I was in an even worse situation. I was OPT and had only 1 chance for H1b lottery left when I was laid off. It was back in 2017. Hardly anyone wanted to hire people on visa at that time because the immigration rules were changing and to make it worse, just 1chance left so companies were not willing to take that risk. The first week was definitely super tough and depressing. I didn’t know what to do and where to start. But being an immigrant you don’t have many options other than to stay strong and start applying and aggressively interviewing. Considering the market right now, getting an interview or even an offer is not that big of a deal. Focus on the visa first even if the opportunity is not that exciting or pays less. You can get a new job later once you are not on a deadline. Meditation definitely helped me through it and stay positive. On the last week of my stay(had planned to move back), I had 3 job offers and right now i make 70% more than my last job. Hope the story helps and motivates you ! Good luck !
Wow, this is exactly the positivity I need right now! Sometimes I feel really angry at the immigration situation, but you are so right about immigrants just having to stay strong. I really appreciate your encouraging words and will do my best
Glad to know the story helped. Also don’t take it personally. I did and for the longest time I felt unworthy. But 5* rating and big annual bonus from ny current manager definitely makes me realize now that it wasn’t me. Just stay positive and don’t miss on any opportunity no matter how small it feels right now. I know some other people too who were laid off and ended up in much better companies with much better comp too.
I can refer, if you are interested.
