Wife is on F1 visa and working remotely from California for a Arizona based. Her TC is 70k.

I’m on H1B visa and my TC is 320k.

How should we file taxes?

1. File jointly for both federal and California. In this case, does she have to pay taxes again in Arizona?

2. File separately.

Take all your W2s go to H&R Block Next year, sit with them, ask for suggestions and file your taxes. Pay them ~$50 per W2. That will give you better idea of what to do for the following years

There's really no better alternative to HRBlock and TurboTax tho, you can hire a CPA but that costs more and you still have to gather a lot of docs anyways

The problem is the broken tax codes and stupid dependency on SSN

I'm definitely a proponent of tax prep software, it costs peanuts and is actually its own write-off (ironically). Half the effort of doing taxes is collecting all of your paperwork && documents, which you need to do regardless. Most tax prep software holds your hand through the process even if you have a more complicated portfolio (rental properties, own your own business as a side hustle, etc). No point in paying a third party to do the easy part.

  • If this is the first time you're thinking to file jointly, IRS doesn't know about your marriage. I would just file separately as single.Your wife would pay less in taxes this way. And as a F1 she don't have to pay social security.
