Recently joined at Microsoft as my first job. I am quite satisfied with where I am now but TC at senior positions seems to be quite higher at google/FB, so I'm looking to shift there in the long run. How can I get into one of these companies, is there anything to do apart from LC? Does making more contributions at my current company, or writing papers really help with getting into Google/FB or just LC? TC: 180k
Do a side project
Leetcode, Grokking the system design, done. Getting Microsoft on your resume gives you any interview you want.
No grokking.
Just leetcode and connect with recruiters on LinkedIn
Maybe get more grounded and stop thinking what’s next and actually get some good experience and a couple promotion at Msft and things will work out
Suggests getting experience but not thinking about what you want next. So don't optimize your experience gaining around goals? Sounds like the McKinsey people I know lol
The more promotions ops gets the further away from market comp they will be
Once you get comfortable (and tired of) building features, you'll want to start driving projects and gain ownership of technical delivery for your team. This will help a great deal.
Why do you want higher TC?
Your TC is very good for a first job. Get promoted to a senior role then switch.
It’s usually problem solving and system design. Sure, having written papers and having done impressive work helps you land an interview, probably even helps you in the team matching phase. But to clear the interviews, it’s just problem solving and system design. One advice to you, from someone who has come to Google from a similar boat - don’t aim for Google and end up spending your free time leetcoding. It will ruin your current job, and as a new grad, this is the best time to learn. Microsoft has some really good engineers at the principal and senior levels and focus the first couple of years becoming a strong engineer. There’s all the time in the world to leetcode.
Even I'm a fresh grad. Would you mind to explain what is strong engineer and how to become. During my first internship at PayPal I realised that software engineering is not just development. What should I do in my initial phase ?
What's your level? 59 with 180TC?
