Long story short, 2002 I went into the audio engineering industry and was there for 10 years. Recession and technology advancements changed the industry reducing jobs. Jumped into landscaping to make money and get back on my feet, went from a laborer, to cad operator to designer. Company closed and then jumped over to Landscape Supply sales B2B which is where I found my passion in sales. After 6 months I became number one in sales for seven consecutive quarters in the company, a total of 9 quarters of number one in sales. I never received any advancement, raises, promotions or bonuses so I joined another Landscape company offering a better salary for the time being. I really want to join the tech industry in sales. I have a 2 month old, wife is off work and I really am over landscaping. I want to be more client facing, presentation building, relationship building, phone calls and emails office life. I’ve tried applying for Oracle, Adobe, Cisco, Amazon because I don’t know anybody for referrals I know my application is pretty dead. How do I get into this industry, build a career, and not suffer a huge financial loss by being started at the very bottom?
One of your biggest gaps is that most tech sales are either SaaS sales or services sales, instead of physical goods. Being good at sales you will need to have a good story how your experience translates into those kind of sales with the hardest part getting past resume screening.
Do you suggest hiring someone to redo my resume that could reword my experience in terms of the industry?
Where are you located? What types of roles are you trying to apply for? +1 to poster above, you have sold before but not saas/software/tech so you will have a hard time jumping into a lateral role. Consider starting at a lower role and working your way up, I know many who have done this to break into the industry
I am located in Los Angeles, I am willing to relocate to another big city. My fear is starting at a lower role means taking probably a very low salary cut. With a wife off work and a 2 month old, I guess I am too scared to go that route.
What’s your TC now?
I would also suggest to look at partners/integrators. Although of course is more appealing to work for a vendor directly, most of those use certified partners to scale their sales. Start in one of those can give you the experience and visibility in one of the big guys.
Hey skimus can I DM you? I’m about to be a new grad looking for a sales development role
You’ll need to start as an SDR or BDR for 3-6months, maybe longer to get into the field. This book is awesome to show you how: Sales Development: Cracking the Code of Outbound Sales https://www.amazon.com/dp/1979107947/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GBgqEb5F3F54H
