Any books or online courses people here would recommend? If you are working in machine learning would like to know what your background is, and how you got into machine learning...
Take some data you have access to experiment with Python tools ...

I’ve been enjoying the udacity courses on ML and coursera but these are paid.
It's taking me a full on degree to barely scratch the surface of data science. Data science is the new "computer science" in that, anyone can do it from varying degrees. Electrical engineers (my field) understand data science from the perspective of communications and signals. We take probability and correlate information and can use machine learning to help interpret such data as a data scientist... you can get in to data science but you must first consider what interests you about data science and start from there. If you just want to make models then you need to start practicing math and probabilities/statistics and then branch it into Data Science. You must ask yourself where you want to start.
Great point. I started out with a focus in probability and statistics not planning to do much CS but was dead wrong. It’s certainly a post grad sort of endeavor.
Maybe not a post grad endeavor... but possibly. You can learn this on the job during internships it's literally as simple as telling your recruiter that you want to "learn more about data science" they will teach you a lot of stuff and give you a head start. But the serious data shit from the engineering or mathematics end is definitely a masters degree thing if you are not able to get it through Interships. Data science is kind of fresh so there may (key word MAY) not be that many places to do data science as a bs degree (yet)
This question gets asked a LOT. I’ll give you two strategies if you know how to write software Plan A: take a ton of time (like a sabbatical) & “go deep” to master underlying theory + math & study this field at a consistently high intensity for a long time (see a book by Cal Newport called “Deep Work” for more on how to do that.) Read classic papers in the field & conduct original research + work with highly motivated, experienced, & competent collaborators and get to yourself a start on all the subtle knowledge you’ll need to acquire to be proficient in the field. blah blah blah Don’t have $$/time for all that? Plan B: Go immediately here & see for yourself if if you actually like this stuff first then you can get a better understanding: www.fast.ai
Convince your manager that you should apply machine learning to solve whatever problem at work you have, and then learn while actually solving it.
Just do it
