How to improve TC by moving internally within Cisco?

Sep 28, 2018 22 Comments

I am looking for my next opportunity and I am thinking maybe it would be better if I move to other team.

Will they increase my compensation if I move to next grade? Will I be able to negotiate?

Current Grade: 6

    • At Amazon u will get L5, $170+k. Few other companies will pay you more than that. Start studying. U r wasting ur time at Cisco.

I've seen it happening. You have to explicitly ask for it. If the team needs you bad, they would bump up your TC

Even if the team wants you, a compensation manager will come in from HR and (generally) undercut your ask.
They will tell you it would not be equitable to pay you more. I have a working theory, that more than just performance and YOE is being judged in this case. While I only have a couple data points, it appears that Diversity on your team does become a factor in your overall pay.

pURY21 can you expand on your theory? You mean you could get paid more if you're bringing diversity into a team?

San Jose? You need to move on if that's the case. I know G6 at Cisco making close to 130K.

Yes, you can, but it will be a low increase unless you move up a grade to get your bonus % up. G6 at $100k is ok, I would try to transfer internally, but have some backups and negotiate. hard ball Cisco with the number you want. Be prepared to walk if you don't get it. They will likely talk with your previous manager about your performance too

Please move out if you can! You will make much more. 100k is very low and even if you move to the next grade, the hike won't be more than 2-4%! And grade 8 is even horrible since you cannot file over time hours, but you are expected to work more.

At cisco, internal moves have got to be lateral per HR, that means grade not comp. You can talk to the new manager to see that they are willing to take your comp up soon after the move. They can also promote you after the move obviously.
