My company has been a slowly sinking ship even before covid so I’ve been looking for a new opportunity in alternative investments #finance and finally found something new and greater. The new pay is almost triple my current TC (I’m moving from NC to NYC) The new job starts in June but the background check started yesterday. My problem is how do I let my current job know while making sure I can keep working and get paid until mid April? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t owe this job anything: the pay is very mediocre for banking, I feel secluded from the team (even before covid and WFH for the last year has not made it better), there are very stressful bank wide layoffs constantly, the best they can do in terms of growth opps is a promotion to AVP after 2 years of work and then VP only after a decade or two (if u know banks, u know where I work). Should I go ahead and tell my current job I’m leaving and risk my manager letting me go instantly or just wait it out but risk my new job revealing it to my old one in their background check? And how do I tell my job so I leave on a good note? My goal is to not burn bridges with the company because the bank world is very small. Current TC: is $75k so this would be a huge bracket change for me
You can request not to contact current employer during background check
This. Don't give notice till you have checks done
+1 only tell them once you're safely on the other boat. Then just tell them you are leaving
1. Thank each and every person in the team, the manager and skip level for all the time spent together. 2. Mention how these people have been amazing to work with and how much you learned from them 3. Say there has been an opportunity for you too good to pass up so you have to go.
Seen lots of people do this, it always goes well.
This is the best advice! Thanks so much for taking the time to break that down. Awesome
Don't tell them you're leaving till before a 2 weeks notice. My advice , start date is far out, wait till you're 💯 sure you're in the other company
I don’t think that’s how background checks work. You should be fine. It’s not like a background check would end up revealing your move to your current employer. As long as you paint it as ‘it’s not them it’s you’ - bridges will hold up just fine. In fact the right folks will see you as a great referral opportunity. Remember bridges are also 2-way 😁.
Some background check services actually call former employers if for some reason they can't verify it employment electronically.
☝🏾 this. Depending on who does your background check, they may ask if they can contact your current employer. There is no reason for you to give them this latitude unless you have no other choice. Also, save the platitudes for when everything is cleared.
Not sure if the background check will trigger your current employer. Generally people use 3rd party called verifyfast or something like that. I don't think your current employer gets to know. I recently switched companies not in banking and verification happened before I gave my notice. Not sure how your new employer conducts the background check.
Tc or gtfo
Do you work in Deutsche bank?
OP is in NC. Easy to figure out.
Not really. Charlotte has a ton of financial companies.
What is in general best answer to give when your new employer asks "why are you looking for a new job?"
I always told them the truth. I needed a better compensation because I have a family to support. Didn’t have any problems getting offers from several of the FAANGs. This might not work all the time, but I didn’t want to be making stuff up.
I always use "looking for more growth and professional development opportunities since I've plateaued at this job". If the new job is in an interesting industry, I mention that the field excites me
Background checks are more to see if ur not a criminal of have felonies.
