I recently changed companies from SpaceX to Boeing to work on the SLS. It is painfully slow over here and low TC cielling in general. I have a lot of free time and this job is secure/stagnant. I was thinking of getting into coding and/or data science with an industry switch in mind. I've been reading about the interesting opprotunities/chanllenges and outerworldly compensation in the tech field. What are your thoughts on coding bootcamps to learn and get into FAANG? What about universities if my employer will pay? What is the most optimal way to get high TC. Will move, skill up, get mentored, grind out, suck off, LC, etc. TLDR: Current TC: 90k, 30k liquid in savings, age: 24yr male,YOE: 3yr, Bachelor's Mechanical engineer, have soul and time to sell for high TC (200+k). If you we're in my shoes what is the plan of action? All advice welcome. Don't lurk. Only you can prevent low TC. Comment one, comment all. Thumbs up for more exposure and relevance to the big fish. #compensation #career #coding #bootcamp #willsellsoultothecode
Just learn basic sql and R, and you can come join Uber as a Sr. Data Scientist II. If you are lucky, your might even join as a director of DS.
Is there a lateral transfer within boeing where you can work as SWE and get experience?
Nope, the location is one of their smaller and more focused areas in Boeing. Mostly focused on manufacturing. I want to leave manufacturing industry. Making apps and widgets to use on the shitter pays more.
Location? Also jump on the web dev bandwagon, will get you a sw job the quickest. Learn the basic tech stack for that, learn DS and algos and LeetCode mass apply and interview your ass off till you make it.
Blind-approved recipe: algorithms and data structures MOOC, then leetcode and grokking system design. Should take 6 months to a year of prep. Yes, that's eternity, but still faster than 3+ years to a masters (you need prereqs for MSCS), and you'd still need to leetcode after that anyway.
which algos/ds mooc is blind-approved i heard grokking system design is poor quality now?
20 years in software engineering industry. Some of the best coders/problem solvers I’ve seen had Physics or Mechanical Engineering backgrounders. The way I saw to get into FAANG without CS degree is to join a small/startup company. Work there for a year or two, reverse engineer the interview process, bootcamp, leetcode everyday, system design, mock interview practice and then apply for FAANG. It’s easier than Navier-Stokes and Finite Elements :) Best of luck!
I was 24 making 55k as a mechanical engineer a couple years ago. I quit, studied using MIT OCW for 9 months. Interviewed at google and failed. Job at seed stage startup LCOL 70k, promo’d 85k Just got an offer from amazon! In final round @ twitter No shortcuts or secrets. Just learn the thing and do it.
Did you leetcode or just OCW?
I used elements of programming interviews and ~20 LC
Leetcode and join FB
No boot camp, project portfolio, or CS degree. How do I pass initial screen? Lying is permissible but usually backfires
Should at least go to a reputable boot camp to get an interview. Then leetcode is all that matters.
