Hello Folks, I’m a senior data analytics professional having about 2.5 years of industrial experience and 2 years of academic experience (as Masters) in data analytics. I have experience working with tools like R, SQL, SAS, Tableau etc. Additionally, I have completed quite a few datacamp and coursera courses on data science and machine learning. My aspiration is to move to a data scientist role next and I’m trying really hard for that. I’m looking for some suggestions and recommendations on things I can do to realize my dream. I would love to hear about people who have gone through similar experiences. One of the challenge that I currently face is, getting interview calls without any prior data science experience. What can I do to get more calls and which companies do you think I should target to start with? Also, I was wondering if people are willing to give referrals? Thanks a lot!
Data analytics and data science are usually overlapping in today’s world man
Do a PhD)
I thought about that and it’s definitely a great way to develop advanced technical skills but I can’t afford to be without job for 4 years! That’s why I’m taking up online courses and doing self study.
Yeah I know there’s a big overlap between the two but at my current role I’m not able use any advanced modeling techniques. We keep doing the same things. I believe as a data scientist people come across different types of problems and use innovative ways of solving those.
There is a lot to know. Look for the book 650 data science interview questions or something like that. It outlines the major topics you need to prove. Software engineering, data manipulation, experimental design and analysis, statistics, ML, ... extra topics that you might have to show are communication, business acumen, and behavioral. Good luck. Note that most companies judge you first on years of professional experience or related research, not your knowledge of the data science force. Some require phds, not all.

Did the googlers deserve to get FIRED?
Your location could matter a lot. Try to do some projects and build your Github profile. Btw, whats your definition of data science because at lot of places its analytics and are you looking for ML specific role?
I’m currently located in the mid western US but I’m open to relocating to other regions. And yes I’m looking for ML type roles where I can build predictive models. At my current role as data analytics, I spend most of my time doing data wrangling and descriptive analytics which gets very monotonous at times!
Even an ml type role as you mention will have a lot of data wrangling. Nobody is spared that besides the top researchers.
