How, when to invest 20k.

Oct 3, 2020 16 Comments

I am a novice in investing. I would like to invest 20k extra cash for long term. Is it better to invest now or after elections? Also I was reading a bit about where to invest - is it better to invest in s&p 500 or qqq. My portfolio does already have of microsoft shares and I believe msft is one of the top picks in qqq. Please suggest. Or is it better to buy amazon, apple stocks . I am planning this investment for 10+ years.

Is your 401k maxed? If not, use the 20k cash to survive until the end of the year and max it out. If you already did that, did you do a Roth or backdoor Roth? Not sure what your yearly taxable income is. If you already did that, did you do a mega backdoor Roth? Point is - make sure you’ve exhausted all your tax advantages accounts first. Except backdoor Roth, everything I listed is deducted from your paycheck. For backdoor Roth, Open a vanguard account and put it all in VTSAX. If you don’t want either, and just want to invest, open vanguard and put it all in VTSAX or if you want less risk, put 80 in VTSAX, 20 in VTIAX or some bond fund.

  • If you want to be safe, invest (100-age)% in index funds and age% in bonds/reit. As there may be lot of volatility until end of year, I would advise to slipt your cash in 4-5 chunks and invest in dips

  • If you do not want to actively manage the stocks and keep for a long time, you should buy index funds. I think in the long run, qqq is better than s&p 500.
