How will Azure & GCP beat AWS?

Alright folks. There are a lot of smart people on here. I’m fascinated by how this space is evolving and I want to understand: — Can Azure and GCP catch up to AWS? — Where / how will they beat AWS? Some trends I’m noticing: — AWS going up the stack to application layer — Google ML tools gaining acceptance - could be a wedge I’m not an expert on this area. But I did build a startup on top of AWS. When we started 5 years ago there really wasn’t an alternative.

Doesn’t make sense since Azure matches or beats AWS dollar for dollar cent for cent. Ateast Scott Gu had vowed to a few years ago . Probably GCP too is doing the same

Microsoft M$FTEE Dec 23, 2017

General Consensus is Azure is roughly a third of AWS currrently and still profitable and of course growing with more momentum. So IMHO volume or thin margins aren’t issues

Cognizant pmdz25.2 Dec 15, 2017

Why do they have to beat? They can all exist - there is enough market!

Platform lock in

Amazon iTeN68 Dec 15, 2017

You missed the serverless vs container bet.

Is AWS only betting on serverless? Though they announced both.

Amazon iTeN68 Dec 16, 2017

Does having difference exclude similarity?

Microsoft Compking Dec 16, 2017

Microsoft seems heavily investing on Kubernetes so that could be one factor though it is not enough. Blockchain is another. I think the biggest factor is Amazon competitors using Azure. I hear that from my friends working in retail. Although Google cloud may be more stable with superior infra, it has a long way to go to catch up with the rich features sets by AWS and Azure. Companies who want to leave AWS will naturally choose Microsoft whereas startups may choose Google cloud over Azure.

Good points. I hadn’t realized Google was perceived to have better infra and stability. You mean vs AWS? Or just Azure? I wonder if AWS will have to move up from commodity to more differentiated offerings. But that seems to contradict “utility.”

Microsoft Jim Raynor Dec 16, 2017

You failed to provide reasons (other than retail) to leave AWS

Amazon IpEb52 Dec 16, 2017

Beat? No. But the cloud computing market is growing rapidly. There's room for a couple of competitors. But not as many as there are. I bet we see some consolidation. Oracle and IBM will likely eventually merge into one of the big three. I bet in ten years there will only be two or three platforms and one way or another the rest well have either folded, or folded in to a bigger platform.

Wait till alibaba cloud kicks off. Dirt cheap

Like anyone would trust their data to a Chinese cloud. They have no respect for privacy or intellectual property.

Cloud bubble will burst soon

Microsoft æ Dec 16, 2017

Then we can finally go back to managing our own infrastructure. I can't wait till we go back to troubleshooting our own servers again.

I'm also surprised about GCP, they have one of the best talent pools, not sure if they leverage them. GCP is junk.

Amazon chuk muk Dec 16, 2017

GCP has no future, it will stay just like "Google+". Even Alibaba cloud will beat them very soon. Only way they are getting a little bit business is by offering huge upfront credit. Now comes to Azure, it's getting momentum but it's still very limited. AWS will be always front-runner. And both can coexist together.

Microsoft Cortanabae Dec 16, 2017

Azure really isn't limited anymore, but still has other problems like terrible UX. I think you are right that AWS will continue to be the front runner with Microsoft as a second. Farther in the future a company like Alibaba could beat both of them.

Microsoft OlWY43 Dec 16, 2017

What, you don't like terrible azure rm templates and constantly changing apis?

Microsoft Jim Raynor Dec 16, 2017

AWS will continue to be the top cloud until 2020. After that, there will be probably some new tech to pursue
