I live in Minneapolis and learned web development online over the last two and a half years. Right now, I work as a React front end developer and am wondering if I would be able to fetch one of these impressive salaries in SF. I have just over one year of experience. At my current gig, I am a top performer. And I usually do well in coding challenges, though I would definitely prepare if I were to move. My degree is in Journalism. Also, what range would I be looking at for salary? TC 85k
Anyone can def make it to sf and those impressive salaries as u put it so long as u practice and can solve leetcode problems. Especially if u are junior. (with seniority comes more diverse expectations like better system design) Question u should be asking is do u really want to. And then are u willing to grind leetcode. If u can't solve easy leetcode problems immediately and fats enough. No need to get disheartened. Just go back and start with a good algorithm book.
I have spent quite a bit of time on CodeWars, and I would definitely practice my problem solving. Right now, I have Jay Wengrow's a common sense guide to data structures and algos and cracking the coding interview. Do you recommend any other books?
I always start with skiena algorithm design manual But really any book that helps u understand the basics is good enough. Algo explanation work differently on people. So if u have found one that explains things the way u get it. Stick to it.
Highly competitive in silicon valley. Keep that in mind. It's important to have both side perspective
Yeah, I appreciate that. Would a tech talk help me stick out?
As long as you can manage to get phone screen the only thing which matters after that is your interview performance. Nothing else
To better your chances, join a coding camp
I relocated here. Yes this area probably has the highest concentration of great engineers. But it also has some of the worst still able to make a living. There are so many jobs here to fill. Not suggesting you’re not great. Just saying you will find work. The bigger question would be if the high cost of living here is worth it for the job you land.
If you prepare well you would do good. Prepare and get those juicies right now. gl
Haha! Thanks! Do you think I would have to stick with front end work?
There are ton of opportunities on front end alone. If you want to stay in fe stay or learn some graphql node etc.
