Damn.. I want that slow Google life. Have been in companies with terrible WLB all through my career and now interviewing with FB😕
I feel folks are much more scientific at G. I am considering to join but my fear I’ll always be the dumbest person in the room.
I'd say people are more careful at G. FB has the hacker mentality and move fast. It's great for trying new things but for me the poor WLB wasn't worth it. There is a lot of imposter syndrome at G. I felt like there was more ego and immaturity at FB but that depends on team.
Sounds like a great opportunity for growth.
Google really sounds like the most awesome place for an engineer. By engineer I mean person who engineers, not hacking or code monkeying. How much leet to get there ?
Can't speak on behalf of Facebook but my WLB improved significantly after joining Google/Alphabet from Tesla. Definitely got the imposter syndrome!
You can join anywhere from Tesla and have better WLB
Twice as many SJWs, but that's about it. Both equally evil, Facebook just gets caught more.
on the bright side, the people are given a voice. but who knows if a tech company should be run this way.. almost feels slightly democratic sometimes. I kinda like hearing all these opinions, overall.
A voice to shout others down is an ugly voice.
Google vs Facebook: Worse (read healthier) food. Better WLB. Slower pace. Better trained managers. More red tape. People care much more about doing what's right. Better benefits. Better infrastructure and development tools. Less equipped micro kitchens.
One decision I still regret to some extent is to move to Facebook from Google. Trying to get back for a while. In Google, you know you are working with smart people who will make their own lives easier, make oncall easier for the team and also make easier to develop code by building more robust and stable systems. At Facebook, for appraisal we still look into LOC, have no concerns on quality and the culture is more like launch and switch. It doesn't matter how fragile the product is. Google pays less than Facebook however. If money is all you care about Facebook is the place.
I like Google better than FB. The quality of engineering at Google is much better than at FB. I have the freedom and time to think more and make better decisions while writing design docs here at G. While at FB, even though I was encouraged to write design docs, code completion and delivery was given more importance than design and hence people who push changes/ fixes faster got promoted faster. That made me almost stop writing design docs and stop following best practices. For almost 3 years, I was racing against others in my team and became a hacky programmer without caring for other people who might read my code. It soon became clear to me that even though I was e5, l4 at Google were much better engineers than me and hence I switched an year back as l4. I'm very happy atm.

Slower, which is good and bad. I'm happier at Google though.
