If one were to contemplate a move to Facebook, Google, Uber, etc. Is there as much movement as with engineers? Are these companies looking for external hires or more to promote within? For clarification, L6 manager at Amazon is the first level of real manager. You can be l5 manager but that's kind of manager in training. L6 is also senior SDE level.
Are you a Technology manager, or a "real" Amazon manager who earlier used to be a janitor? You'll do well elsewhere if you are the former, otherwise you are better off at Amazon.
Since he compares with Sde3, I assume he/she meant sdm l6. I am interested to know if other big tech companies hire managers at that level actively. I know microsoft, oracle, etc do. But not sure on facebook, google, etc.
Yes, they do hire at that level when they find the right candidates. A number of L6 managers from Amazon have moved to Facebook/Google.
Yea i meant engineering manager.
What do you do as "real" manager?
