You mean beyond normal PIP firings? Probably because they want more employees not less.

Google and Microsoft are not that aggressive but FB doesn’t need to go for lay-off since it is taken care by their aggressive rating culture, so engineers get managed out by PIP aggressively.

  • F gives you 3 years to grow to L5(senior) or you are terminated. And at L5 expectations are quite high, so you are terminated as well. As a result there is no need to lay off people

Definitely engineer confidence, which results in talent retention and being an attractive workplace for talent that’s out there.

Top tier talent doesn’t want to work someplace that may arbitrarily cut them. They have choices, and they def won’t tolerate an uncertain environment that isn’t a high upside job like a moonshot startup (e.g.: NOT G or FB)

Perf based firing is fine, but layoffs usually mean a business unit is gone and you (by no fault of your own/out of your control) don’t have a job now.

Because of high margins, divide profts by number of swe and you will realize 500k for swe is less than what they should be paid.
