My girlfriend and I are moving to Seattle in a few months, and we're planning to live together. One of us will have to do the bridge commute everyday. I'll be bringing a car up, but I've heard that taking Microsoft's shuttles or taking the bus are generally better ways to commute over the bridge.

Currently, we've been looking at high rise apartments in SLU, since it seems pretty safe while also being in the city. We've also considered Belltown, but have heard that it could be unsafe there at night. We've heard some good things about Kirkland/Redmond, but I'm not sure of the commute from there.

I'm looking for opinions on what communities to live in and any insights from people who have lived in the Seattle area, as well as more information on the Microsoft shuttle commute times. Thanks so much!

TC: 180 for each of us

Don't live in Redmond unless you're over 70 (Been there done that). That place is a graveyard.

  • Gonna be light rail in 2023 from downtown Seattle to Microsoft and everywhere in between. Pick anywhere along the line and it will be relatively easy for both of you.

It’s tricky, downton bellevue is nicer and closer but you got no direct buses to SLU so you probably have to park in south kirkland p&r which is a 5-10min ride and fills up before 9. It’s faster to drive but the toll and parking might kill you. Also you are likely going to get into work only twice a week even thru 2022 so driving might not be that expensive.

If you use the shuttle commute times will be better, but pre-covid going Westbound in the evenings on 520 from Bellevue to the Bridge was total parking lot. Carpool lanes (and thus the shuttle) moved better though.
