L6 at Facebook, and interviewing at Google. Is there a way to make sure Level is the same or above?

I never actually knew what my level was at Facebook until a couple weeks in when my manager told me and explained how it all worked. So obviously it was never brought up in my interview at Facebook. But now that I've been at one of these companies where it matters, and interviewing at another where it seems to as well - compensation tied, how would one ensure you're being interviewed and getting the offer at the right level? These levels mostly seem to matter at FANG companies, but the titles don't tell you much.

Offer letters don't give you levels, just titles at Facebook. Plus it's never "talked" about. In process at Google, so don't know yet. Of course I understand leveling at non-FANG companies. When they give you the right compensation, but a "downgraded title", there's a decision point you don't care about it as much on what the title is vs. the scope and impact of job itself. i.e. you go from a CMO or VP to a non-executive title at Facebook.

    • Levels don't actually matter, most people joing large companies won't know their level till after they join.

  • Few friends who joined Google from FB L6 got down leveled to L5 for some reason. I have another friend from L5 Goog who was upleveled to FB L6

Google is usually known for downleveling

Why did they take the offer if downleveled? L5 to L6 sounds dreadfully difficult.

  • Be open and ask the recruiter. Tell them your current level and ask for what the position would be. There’s a level mapping guide here or googlers can chime in with the equivalent.

Would love to know if L6 at Facebook is the same as L6 at Google in general (assume yes). Will love to see or know more about this level mapping guide at Google. I totally understand Facebook's now after having been there a few years. I guess you're saying it's ok to openly ask the recruiter at Google. If the position isn't high enough on level, I guess will ask to interview for a different position?

    • Ask the recruiter for sure. Why leave it to their judgment. When I was interviewing I told them "I'm only considering L5 positions, so let's set up an L5 loop".

0822 google, it’s not about not doing due diligence. It was my first job in USA after masters. Had worked in India where different levels are different titles. And HR don’t tell u that there is something called level. There was no blind. No relatives in USA. Friends who were all in same boat. It’s hard for you to understand
