I am off to Canada

Mar 18, 2019 158 Comments

Just got myself transferred to Canada. Got a PR in 6 months under express entry.

After 7 years in the US, I want to say fuck you to the American government. Most incompetent pieces of garbage.

I love the country and the people, but the downright racism with this per country cap nonsense is unacceptable.

I spent 100s of thousands of dollars in education here and paid much more in taxes. Last year, I made 400k. Still no green card. To anyone waiting, it’s not worth it, believe me. Voting is the most important right you have. Without it, you will be undermined, underpaid and exploited with nothing to show for it in the end. They will joyfully play around with your life like arbitrarily canceling H1Bs or ensuring your spouse can’t work. Look at how they keep dangling HR392 and HR1044 in front of us when everyone knows it’s never going to pass. Why would it, we are inconsequential. Worst part is they tax you on your world wide income as a temporary worker. Fuck that!! I am done, I am out. No taxation without representation!!!!!

To anyone planning to come here with the hope of settling, if you are in a backlogged country, turn away is my advice. There are more welcoming countries with fairer laws! Heck the world has changed. Now, India and China are pulling their own so maybe I will go home someday.

That being said, I don’t want to end this on a bitter note. America has been wonderful to me. I learned a lot here, met my first love here, made some good money, worked on some cool shit and had some incredible moments. Goodbye America!

hooli is that prick who got hit on the head in Trump’s rally. You work for a company who’s ceo was an immigrant on H1B. Don’t be salty!

  • Sums up the experience of thousands of legal immigrants. Some can and choose to leave, others are stuck by the beautiful and exploitative structure of US Immigration.

And before someone comes up with racial crap like - “go to your country” - Not all people can do that, their families are working here , kids are studying here , and they are paying taxes here. It’s not abnormal to expect PR in a few years

Ihb47 I tend to agree with you. I think people think there's a perfect immigration system, there isn't. There's just the one that works for you.
Taking a step back and looking at the us system objectively, you'll see that it's unique but still gives a more level playing field to outsiders who can't rely on an in-group (family or ethnic community) in order to get a means to immigrate. Every country is given an equal chance. Of course, an equal chance doesn't guarantee an equal outcome but that's not the fault of USCIS.
Because of the number of people that want to come here, we tend to blame the process without stepping back and seeing that the us is pretty generous with immigration.
About 1 million people are given permanent residency, the job market is not restricted to you based on language or lack of 'American' experience and it's a very easy society to assimilate.
Yes, the processing of applications takes forever but it's by no means the worst country in that regard.
It's ironic that people who are advantaged when it comes to winning the h1b lottery get upset when they realize the consequences of getting a temporary Visa is a delay in getting a permanent one.
Us is so open that everyone and their mother has an opinion on the immigration system and are not afraid to share it.
And to be fair, hr1044 exists because of the intense lobbying of certain groups, not because the us has prioritized immigration reform.
All of this does not deny the fact that people slip through the cracks but this is not by design and it's not because the system is broken.
Ultimately, everyone should decide on what works best for them. But it's unique to your situation and not necessarily the fault of the system.
Btw, I do know about other immigration systems besides the us. Read about the weirdness of Sweden's for a minute and how one can get denied permanent residency for not paying an insurance tax that one was informed about, 5 years prior.

And I wish OP all the best. You came, you got the career experience, you improved your finances and now you're able to leverage on all of that, in Canada.

@hooli the only country that has a decade long backlog is India, thanks to their own greed

paq dude from Amazon, Europe is not a country you moron and China has the exact same quota as any other country.

To be honest, I blame those indian IT consultant companies. They abuse H1b and GC.

@newton, in 2018 Europe received a total of 22k EB-GC (1st to 3rd categories), India alone received 21k for the same categories. This is due to the spillover. India actually consistently takes 18-25% of GC in the last 3-4 years. In Canada India takes only 15-18% of PR for the last three years. And that 18% only happened in 2018, most likely as a result of US H1B issues. So, it's incredibly abnormal that India has more GC recipient percentage and still has a massive backlog in the US. I think the problem is more than just a 7% cap policy which, you should know, is not an example of racism but affirmative action.

Boo hoo OP, cry us a river about the unfair and racist 7% cap, and how not every single underpaid "consultant" in the Indian body shops is able to get a GC. Boo hoo.

Your undeserving country is getting far more GCs than alloted, as someone already printed out to you. Don't assume people are stupid and uninformed.

Canada has lower TC, but I think you will be happier there (TC is not always tied to happiness, shocker). Wish you best of luck!

I lived in Canada for 10 years. I understand the reasons to leave Canada and work in the US, and vice versa. Even just among cities of NY, Seattle, and SF, Blinders would endlessly argue which is the best without considering the others' perspective. You just do what's best for you, and I wish you nothing but happiness, even if calling me "super weak thinking" somehow gives you joy.

Go on, keep talking and see if that somehow changes my government’s immigration policies. Make sure to take as much sick days as you can, though. The immigration changes may take awhile... 🤣

Don’t forget that you can take your social security contributions with you since you will not get the benefit anyways given that you contributed for less than 10 years.

It’s a trick few people know about. I know this is possible for many EU citizens if they return to their home countries. Not sure about Canada. Check the social security site.

I’m very transparent about how I allocate rewards and have an ongoing conversation through the year to set expectations. No surprises. That’s my goal.

We do have our limitations with the budget through. I cannot match Netflix, Airbnb, Google, FB salaries and RSU. I can make up for the RSU cliff with special stock grants and fight for faster than average promo velocity.

Above all else though I try to evaluate what makes people happy and try to provide an environment conducive to that. Not everyone is about high TC.

There’s no restrictions on how many people you could hire from India, the quota is just on GC and citizenship. So Indians grow in numbers and diversity isn’t affected. Just that not enough Indians become voters.
