I moved to a new apartment in the same community. I had a mailbox key of my old apartment. I wanted to renew my car registration online and DMV online portal did not let me change the address and DMV sent the registration sticker to old address. I thought of just checking my old apartment mail box as I had the key. I was noticed by the new resident doing that. To give him confidence I apologized, I told the whole story, told him I am a fellow resident and shared my Drivers license. He said that’s fine, smiled and left. Today I got a call from leasing office about that saying it is illegal and was asked to surrender the key. I apologized to leasing office surrendered the key. What are the chances of new resident pressing charges? And what is the best course of action at this point?
Very high
Didn’t you know it’s a felony? That said I probably wouldn’t press charges.
Why would you do it when people are around and why not mail forwarding, it’s free!?!? Anyways just do as the leasing office says, I don’t think he would press charges.
I did not know that there is a free mail forwarding service. Any pointers appreciated.
USPS. It’s a dollar so technically not free. Are you new to US? Things are pretty strict and streamlined specially dealing with things like mails. You can get federal time for opening someone else’s mail. So just be aware.
"press charges" is not a thing, it's only in movies. In reality the police decides what to investigate and charge, with or without anyone "pressing" shit.
I think there are two tracks? Criminal and civil...
You don't get deported over a civil case. If OP isn't a citizen and the police get involved and charge him with a crime there's a chance he's leaving the US. Small chance, but why take it?
Wow, you are right, that was stupid.
Just relax, while you did something illegal you didn't have a nefarious intent. Look at it as a life lesson. I'd say it's unlikely authorities will want to prosecute you, they have plenty of other things to do going after real criminals.
Yes it was really stupid, but just return the key and move on. I woudnt worry at all.
Deport yourself. We can't have immigrants with criminal history. Edit: This was meant to be sarcasm, which doesn't seem to work around here. I'm an immigrant myself with a speeding ticket in my past.
The worst that can happen is you will be asked to appear before magistrate clerk. Magistrate will dismiss the case, if not, ask for trial.
