I feel like my life needs a change but I’m terrified of change

I currently have a pretty interesting WFH job with lot of freedom and exposure to a wide range of technology. My job is fairly stress free with 30hr week average. I live in the south with $153k TC which affords me a pretty comfortably life while saving up around $50k a year. I also have a pretty great support structure here with a huge circle of friends, family, house etc and a very relaxed, familiar and comfortable life. But I turned 30 this year and I have this nagging feeling that I am not living up to my potential and I should be out in CA working for a FANG company doing challenging work and making them sweet TC gains. I feel like my life has kinda gotten stagnant and I could use a major change like moving to the other side of the country. But honestly I am terrified about leaving all this behind to potentially working 60+ hr weeks, living in a tiny apartment with no friends or support structure and just regretting my decision. Anyone been in a similar situation or could maybe give me an outsider perspective on this? I am seeing equal pros and cons and can’t seem to make up my mind. I would probably go for strategic/innovation roles instead of dev roles if that makes a difference.

Be careful what you wish for. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Depends on what you value most. I value the time I get to spend with friends and family.

Also $153K TC in south is more like 300K+ in Bay Area.

In my 30s, I honestly dream of work that you have. I would spend so much more quality time with my family and on my hobbies, exercise more, travel on weekends starting from Friday afternoon... The kind of work style you are wishing for fits better if you are out of college, I guess. My maybe biased opinion.

I am in my early 30's and agree with you.

I agree too. I work for Amazon and it’s good interesting and well paid work but if you make decent money and get to have good family time, keep it as long as you can while staying competitive out there.

I have this really great life where I have all my needs met and free time to pursue passions and charity work. But I wanna throw it away to live like a rat and work on different ways to sell advertising to people. My hope is I can get some kind of validation thru this. TLDR Stupid

If your life needs a change, get married, have a kid, move to the next stage in life. If you’re already there... Travel. Enjoy the one life you have to live. Almost no one ever regrets at the end of their lives having worked too little. Some regret working too much, not seeing their family as much... you have a great life. Enjoy it.

If you have the skills though, you do software or product.

Wells Fargo Paperboi OP May 12, 2018

Software, but I’m now more on a strategic position where I run projects

You are crazy if you want to give up the lifestyle you have. If you feel unfulfilled find an exciting/challenging side project and work your ass off doing that.
