I got no money and have health problems, what are my options?

I don't have much money saved and I regularly suffer from health problems all the time. I don't want to continue working full time, I can do a few hours when I feel well but it's not possible with the kind of jobs we have. I am by myself in this country (I have friends but no family). What are my options? 1. Find a partner who supports me? Ugh it will be too much burden, so why would someone do that? 2. Go back to my country and stay with parents? I don't want to depend on them forever. 3. Create a side income that supports basic living like paying my bills? I can't do it here due to visa restrictions but maybe in my home country. I don't know anything outside of the job I do, so any suggestions for this? Anything else?

I would go for option 2. Stay close to your family, they’ll be happy to help you out.

I don't know the answer but the best seems to be return to your country and rely on your parents to help you with this

I was dealing with a similar issue myself. I would say option #2. I think you should bite the bullet and leave the ego at the door

How much do you have saved? What’s your home country?

Upgrade the insurance plan to cover expenses? I have two guys at work that literally sick a day a week and we make it work for them

I don't suffer from one particular illness. I am weak in general so I often run into health problems, like abdominal pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, back pain. Some of these are explained but some problems are unexplained by the doctors. How do you make it work?

Whatever makes your immune system give up on you so often needs attention. It happened to me few times when I had untreated depression that I was “catching” all kinds of problems like exactly ones you listed. Once I started to work on that one and added shit ton of cardio, everything got better. I am not sure if going home is going to help, to be honest. You can’t run away from issues in your body. I have my engineers both on flexible schedule and chunked the work in a way that they can catch up with it when they feel better and the team does not suffer.

I don’t know what to say. As someone who used to suffer from major chronic disease, I feel sorry about your situation. Hope everything sorts out greatly.

You need to see an Integrative clinician. They specialize in the weird things that conventional medicine can’t figure out. It doesn’t need to cost a lot. You’ll probably need to start with a diet overhaul (gluten, dairy, sugar will be eliminated to begin with). Some people won’t feel better by going back home.

Thanks. I'll check them out. Is it like a naturopath, are they reliable?

Generally a ND recommends changes that address the underlying actual root cause. Generally MD treats the symptoms with drugs, because doctors customers prefer to walk away with a pill and not make lifestyle changes.

If you had more money saved, I would suggest moving to a lower cost of living city and buying duplex or triplex, living in one unit, and renting out the others. If that doesn’t seem to be a possibility, I would consider going back home and focus 100% on getting healthier or learning to manage this condition. You may just need to make your health your job for now. I’m sorry to hear this is happening.

What motivated you to come here? And you had health problems all along, or started happening recently? I would say stay here as you have more opportunities. But I without knowing your visa situation (like how long to get your citizenship etc) it won’t be a good suggestion.

As a child, I was weak. I would catch cold often and suffered from body pains. It gradually got better during teen years and early adulthood, so I started focusing on education and career. There were few minor things still but manageable, maybe because I was younger and around family. Career in the US hasn't worked out great so far. But I managed to pay off my debt and have emergency fund saved up. Health started getting worse recently and as I get older, it also seems to be a solo struggle which is depressing.

In that case, I suggest you have a plan for retirement back at home and work towards it (either here or back, whichever takes you there faster financially). And for gods sake, work on your health too, never compromise on that. Hang in there... and good luck to you.

I went through this situation myself, immediately after graduating with masters I joined a startup as it’s first engineer and moved to Bay Area, things were going well and I was working 6 days a week and then one day I had severe abdomen pain. The pain used to come and go, the more I work the more unbearable it used to be. I went to may be 3 different specialists and got done colonoscopy, mri and other tests only to find nothing. After going through some more hardships I ended up with a different job and kaiser insurance. The first doctor I saw at kaiser diagnosed my condition as irritable bowel syndrome and prescribed dicyclophmine, which helped for almost a year. In one of my trips to my home country I forgot to take this medicine with me and I was without it for a month and had no symptom of abdomen pain. I stopped using the medicine changed my diet and exercised regularly. I am not sure what actually helped but I am healthy now and enjoying my work. I don’t have a solution to your problem but I thought my story might give you hope.

IBS is mainly a result of poor diet. I think staying at your home fixed it for you, and maybe you continued through. Thanks for sharing your story. In my case, different things pop up every now and then and I don't know what to do. I came to terms with the fact that my immune and nervous system ain't that strong. Basically, I am at least 10 years older than my age, if not more.
