Microsoft is known for having great work-life balance though. Try switching teams
Really depends on team, org and division
How is that possible? Are these people all super young? No families? No social life like dating and such? Sounds like a whole bunch of losers to me to be honest, who takes pride in leaving at 11 at MSFT? I would leave assuming TC is not insanely high. My TC is ~400k and I do 40h a week, as it should be.
Which team is this ?
Make fat commits and leave whenever you want to. You can't argue with performance
Wrong answer. I’ve seen plenty of people shipping a lot of good code but being pushed to the sidelines because they weren’t conforming to the team dynamics, including staying in the office late. That might perhaps work if your manager is actually a significant stakeholder in the company (e.g. founder), but not if he/she is instead a line manager living in a world of politics and bullshit.
^ this. Happened to me in a team working 40 hrs/week at a series A. Turned everyone against me by working harder and proposing/implementing solutions to issues created by more experienced engineers. Fuck startups
Find a new team, your current one sounds utterly insufferable
Which team is this?
Is this in US,
Show them the hourly wage breakdown and how that compares with public transportation workers with pension and overtime
Switch teams/companies. Bad work life balance is company and team dependent. In teams like you describe there is usually no way to change that, and if you work 9-5 you will disrupt the team dynamic and may end up getting piped.
If he's at MSFT then def should just switch teams. Most are 40 hours or fewer
Be a team player and join in. Perhaps they won't have to work so hard with you being a part of the team. If thst doesnt worj then change the team quickly if you are not a good culture fit.
Last guy who tried to got pipd
Haven’t heard of pips at Microsoft.
