I see Clover POS systems everywhere all over the country. Why aren’t they valued like Stripe/Square?

I’m a little confused why they are flying under the radar in terms of their public reputation among engineers. They seem to be taking off (literally half the restaurants in the bay, LA, and even NY, Michigan, Texas, & everywhere use them). But in terms of engineers, we have only heard of Stripe/Square. Why is that the case? Which have you heard of?

Oops I messed up the pole, my bad

Square SAwg63 Jan 20, 2020

I think they're only a POS and don't do the actual payment processing.

A hidden gem in the valley.

First data.

Square bixbite Jan 20, 2020

Yup, Clover is owned by First Data and pushed on merchants by Bank of America and PNC. It's a competitor to Square/Stripe, but it's a fintech insider rather than an outsider

Square BDFr06 Jan 21, 2020

It’s also an inferior product.

Clover has a lot of politics and the TC is not as much as Square.

They do not compete within the same markets - stripe is built for e-commerce while square delivers POS solutions directly to merchants. Clover is sold through a platform that serves a much higher percentage of small business merchants than those that use Square. Since they are already owned by a public company that offers other services within the vertical it does fly under the radar but that does not mean the value is not there for engineers who work on the product, it is just not as obvious / one would not know that unless you have been in the industry for a while

Stripe is unlike square/clover where the latter focus on brick and mortar stores stripe targets mostly online businesses
