It was back in 2015. There was no Pivot process, but I think dev list already existed at the time. I had been only 1 year in the role, but saw things weren't going as well as expected. I did not think I was doing terribly, since my annual review was 'a-ok'. I told my manager I wanted to rotate in 1-3 months. I had a few informational interviews and hiring managers seemed interested . They asked me to apply for the job, which I did. I got an email confirming and no one cc'ed on it. I started seeing a pattern where hiring managers immediately stopped engaging after talking to my manager. Some of them even cancelled follow up chats 1 or 2 minutes before the in-person meeting, even though I had given them enough time to respond to Outlook invites. This happened 2 or 3 times. That was rude. Amazon is a spread campus and it takes time to move from one building to another. I only found out about dev list in blind last year. Does that mean I was on dev list? One day, I presented a project very badly to a director. It was my fault. I wasn't prepared for the questions and he got very frustrated. 2 weeks later, my manager scheduled a one hour 1:1. When I got to the room, HR was there. Worst months of my life. I never got a warning that I wasn't meeting expectations. It doesn't help that my manager was very 'cold' and I couldn't read any hints he wasn't getting what he needed. That day, he gave me a few very specific projects to work on, with timeline and clear deliverables. I did it when he wanted, what he wanted with the quality he wanted. After 2 months of grinding, he released me from the PIP. Thank GOODNESS. I started looking for a new role within Amazon. At least hiring managers were more open to talk. I was so close to get an offer from a team, when HM said "hey seems like I need vp approval to bring you in... What is this?" Was I still on dev list? I thought I was done with PIP or any blockers... I eventually moved to a third team 2 months down the road. Anyway that was 5 years ago. Got my shit together and survived. AMA
