I want to be a manager at Google someday. If I get a promo from SDE to manager at Amazon, should I take it?

Same question as title.

Direct quote from my friend "Being an sdm at amazon implies you’re actively contributing to a toxic culture. If I was hiring anywhere it would be a huge red flag."

Since I want to become an SDM in my career, wouldn't it be a good idea to get SDM experience? Or is Amazon so toxic that it would literally hurt my future career growth relative to staying as SDE?

Each person should evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and choose the right path. Herd mentality makes us take options less ideal for us.

L5 SDM is a nightmare role and is only good in some select orgs that can actually groom an L5 SDM to L6 SDM. If you really want to be an L5 SDM, get your L6’s and L7’s buy in for your L6 SDM promo with some fixed timeline. Getting to L6 SDE, and then converting to an SDM would be simpler because you would already be used to leading a band of engineers to deliver key features, and all you’d need then is to learn how to manage people. Once you get a hang of that, GTFO from there.

    All the best!

  • If you want to be a manager, then take the offer. If you are an IC now, you won't be able to join another company as an sdm. And it might be a while until an opportunity to become an sdm at another company comes up.

  • +1 it's not a promo. Your level and pay will likely stay the same. The level of responsibility will go up.
