I'm going to start working in Amazon AWS soon. I read a lot of negative posts here and really want to hear anything good and inspiring from Amazonians, because I like the idea of LPs and found interviewers being good and interesting people Any tips how to fit the team and earn the trust fast? any tips on how to succeed? I'm 10+ YOE, hired as SDE2. I feel like I might get into some aggressive environment with younger SDE2s. All Amazon haters and trolls please refrain from using banana jokes. it's just boring.
All companies have leadership principles. Amazon has 12. Most have way fewer. Just don’t forget to Be Frugal and you’re halfway there.
12 principles feels like 6 principles too many
Check the Amazon lounge once you start and ask for details there. In the meantime, enjoy any time off between jobs :)
Cool! That's exactly what I'm doing :)
Amazon lounge, what’s that?
Its honestly not that bad. It's a fast paced work environment where people are tossed into the deep end and expected to ramp up quickly. You get what you make of it. The company is frugal so no real perks but you'll be surrounded by a bunch of smart people who also have the drive to succeed. Low performers tend to be weeded out, but sometimes it really comes down to whether you have a good manager or not. I enjoy my job sometimes but other times I'm over this shyte, but comp isnt too bad and I work remote so really cant complain.
I really enjoyed taking to smart people during interview, so I really hope to learn a lot from them, considering I got great experience in the past as well
Best summary of working at Amazon ever given!
This is highly team dependent. I work in an awesome team, 10-5 and 3 days wfh. Teams are pretty independent at Amazon and greatly vary. I have heard horror stories from other engineers mostly due to bad managers. If you can find a good manager then I would seriously consider it because there are a ton of bright engineers here and you can do really impactful work, especially in AWS.
I had an opportunity to choose between a few teams and really considered my first impression about manager as part of decision. I really hope I made a right choice.
Amazon is a good company. A lot of interesting projects (a lot of boring ones too). But once you got in, you can transfer to a cool one. Company culture really encourages moving between teams every couple years or so.
The bad things about amazon is that there’s plenty nepotism and favoritism going in some places.
Oh. That's interesting. Never heard of that.
There are some things put i place to counter it (in promotion and hiring processes), but human factor always finds a way
What are banana jokes?
Why... would you join as sde2 with 10 yoe... you will hate your self... what tc did you get? 250? 270?
I'm pretty sure I won't hate myself for joining as SDE2. I see nothing wrong with that, they don't know me when hiring.
Good. Keep that mindset
Is this Seattle?
